Danish shipping company Maersk plans to launch a new feeder service that is anticipated to cut down transit times between Asia and Northern Italy by at least five and up to 21 days.
The new feeder service will run between Port Said, Egypt, and Vado Gateway at the Port of Genoa, Italy.
Port Said is located at the northern end of the Suez Canal, while Port of Genoa is one of the busiest ports in Italy.
The first 3,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) feeder under the new service will leave from the Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) at the Suez Canal’s east-bound lane on 8 July. On 14 July, it will reach the APM Terminals Vado Ligure Terminal in Italy.
It is expected to significantly minimise transit times between Asia and Northern Italy, based on whether the cargo origin departure is at Busan, South Korea, or the Chinese ports of Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Shekou or Xingang.
The strategic location of Vado Ligure facilitates better connectivity between ocean, road and rail, while the semi-automated APM Terminals Vado Ligure terminal is said to be an advanced gateway for growth in Italy, with a lower CO₂ footprint.
Maersk Central South Europe managing director Leah Offutt said: “In an increasingly unpredictable environment, our customers ask for more reliable and agile supply chains – and this is exactly what the new Vado Express Service will deliver.
“Comprehensive ocean/rail/road solutions will significantly shorten transit time between Asia and locations across Northern Italy – the second most important EU location, behind Germany, for industrial production and it ranks third in exports of goods, just behind France.”
Last month, Maersk conducted an international cargo relay in China, as part of the China State Council’s 2019 plan to expedite the development of the international shipping centre in Shanghai.
